Coming into the back hallway, the space was dark and crowded with underwhelming neutral patterns. We wanted to create a sense of escape, a little oasis within the hotel by introducing bold colors and floral/nature motifs.
{before}
{process}
The floors of the hallway were stripped, cleaned, and painted white to allow light to bounce. We added real lighting with ombre semi flush mounts from West Elm and salvaged the Persian rug runner. To make the hallway feel deeper we painted the walls Graphite in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.
Inspired by the original song Woodstock by Joni Mitchell, we painted a garden scene mural with lyrics, "We are stardust, we are golden, and we've got to get ourselves..." (the back to the garden line is implied by the plants and flowers on the wall.) The style of the botanical mural is based off of artist Lucy Tiffney, whose work we admire for its whimsical use of color and pattern.
To add an extra touch of magic, we added a GIANT glitter luna moth mural. Luna Moths are symbolic spiritually as mystical animal totems that encourage you to seize the day. We hope our guests feel like they can make the most of their visit with us! As a kind reminder for the guests to keep off the unaccessible staircase, our newest mural requests it's viewers to 'stay off the greenery'.
A special detail we wanted to keep in the space is the original sign to the inn, made almost 100 years ago! It now is proudly displayed at the end of the hallway, serving as an ode to the old days of the hotel. We love seeing the old sign in photos we recovered from the site when we renovated in 2019-2020. It was was the inspiration behind our updated modern logo design.
