The Ginger Jar

Updated: Dec 12, 2022

{the journey}

One of the mountain-view rooms on the second floor (Room 1)

Here's our visual depiction of the transformation:

{concept}

The inspiration for this room came from the blue & white china patterns you so often see on plates, cups, and jars, inspiring the name for the room "The Ginger Jar".

{before}

{process}

The work began by gutting the room of its decor, removing the lamps, ceiling light fixture, and old chairs (the seats were caving inward!) We donated the bed, but were thankfully able to upcycle the vintage dresser that was still in good condition. Using a base coat of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Pure White, a chinoiserie stencil was painted on in a bold blue (reminiscent of fine china) before sealing the piece with wax (see our blog post about it here). The walls were painted white, our new furniture was installed and artfully arranged, and upgraded linens were the final touch, making the space feel fresh and modern with a nod to its vintage roots. We used Japanese Noren Curtains for the closet doors to carry through the motif, and featured Kuba Cloth Pillows on the bed for some added texture. The stunning Persian rug is a true vintage piece and inspired the design of the space with its color palette, and the burnt orange velvet chair is by Calligaris New York, a {verdigreen} fave.

The technique we used in the bathroom was a 'drip' method with Chalk Paint, which was sealed with multiple coats of lacquer. Little koi fish stencil details were added to the room on the floor and the wall (detail pictures below) "jumping" out of the authentic Vietnamese fishing baskets.
